The conversation around AI coding assistants usually focuses on productivity metrics — lines of code generated, time saved on boilerplate, bug detection rates. But there's a more interesting shift happening beneath the surface: AI tools are changing the architectural decisions teams make.
We interviewed 30 engineering leads at companies using AI code assistants (Copilot, Cursor, Claude) for over six months. The patterns that emerged say more about how software is evolving than any benchmark.
More Services, Smaller Services
When generating boilerplate is nearly free, the cost of creating a new service drops significantly. Teams report they're more likely to extract functionality into separate services rather than adding to existing ones. The threshold for "worth its own service" has shifted downward.
This has tradeoffs. More services mean more operational complexity — deployment pipelines, monitoring, inter-service communication. Teams that don't invest in platform tooling find themselves drowning in microservices that are easy to write but hard to manage.

The Testing Paradox
AI assistants generate tests quickly, which sounds like a win. But several teams reported a surprising pattern: AI-generated tests often test implementation details rather than behavior, creating brittle test suites that break with every refactor.
The teams that benefit most have senior engineers reviewing AI-generated test structure — accepting the code but adjusting the testing strategy. The AI writes the test code; the human decides what to test.
Where This Goes
The emerging pattern is clear: AI assistants are most valuable when they handle the "how" while humans focus on the "what" and "why." Architecture decisions — system boundaries, data ownership, failure modes — still require human judgment. Implementation within those boundaries is increasingly delegated.
